Finding the right solution
Ventilation Fan Types, Arrangements & Design Considerations
Common industrial fan designs for ventilation systems:
Backward Curved
Efficient, stable performance for many general ventilation and exhaust applications. Well-suited for clean to moderately dirty airstreams.
Backward Inclined
Reliable choice for industrial exhaust and ventilation systems with moderate system pressure. Common in facility ventilation and process exhaust applications.
Industrial Exhauster
Designed for removing air, fumes, heat, and contaminants from industrial spaces. Available with application-specific materials, coatings, and accessories.
Axial
Effective for high-volume, lower-pressure ventilation applications. Often used for general building ventilation, wall exhaust, and large-space air movement.
Mixed Flow
Useful where higher airflow and moderate pressure are both needed. Compact option for certain ducted ventilation systems.
Fan selection considerations for ventilation applications:
Ventilation fan selection depends on the facility, process, air quality goals, and system design. Key considerations include:
- Airflow Volume –
Required CFM for general ventilation, exhaust, or source capture - Static Pressure –
Ductwork, filters, dampers, hoods, and other system losses - Airstream Conditions –
Dust, fumes, vapors, moisture, heat, or corrosive elements - Temperature –
Ambient ventilation or elevated-temperature exhaust - Location –
Indoor, outdoor, rooftop, wall-mounted, or process-integrated installation - Noise Requirements –
Sound-sensitive work areas or nearby occupied spaces - Efficiency Requirements –
Energy use over continuous or frequent operation - Maintenance Access –
Serviceability, cleanout needs, and long-term reliability - Safety Requirements –
Spark-resistant construction, coatings, guards, and controls where needed
Industrial ventilation fan arrangements commonly used:
Fan arrangements define how the fan and motor are mounted and driven. Common arrangements for ventilation systems include:
Arrangement 1
The fan and motor mount separately to a unitary base.
Arrangement 4
A direct-drive arrangement where the fan wheel mounts directly on the motor shaft.
Arrangement 9
The motor mounts to the side of the fan pedestal with no unitary base required.
Arrangement 10
The motor mounts within the fan base for a compact belt-drive configuration.
Fan design & accessory considerations for industrial ventilation:
Ventilation systems must be designed around airflow requirements, facility layout, contaminant type, maintenance access, and operating environment. Poor fan selection can lead to insufficient exhaust, poor capture velocity, high energy use, excessive noise, or premature fan wear.
Application-specific engineering helps ensure the fan, accessories, controls, and materials are properly matched to the ventilation system and facility goals.
Industrial ventilation applications often include several of the following items:
Airflow Control
- Dampers:
Help balance and control airflow at the fan inlet or outlet - Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs):
Adjust fan speed for efficient airflow modulation and lower energy use - Airflow Meter:
Supports system balancing, performance verification, and troubleshooting
Noise & Vibration Control
- Silencers:
Reduce inlet or outlet noise in sound-sensitive areas - Vibration Isolators:
Help reduce vibration transfer to structures and ductwork - Vibration Sensors/Switches:
Monitor fan health and support preventive maintenance
Safety & Specialty Requirements
- Spark-Resistant Construction:
Used where combustible dusts or vapors may be present. - Custom Shaft Seals:
Help limit leakage in specialized ventilation applications. - Isolation Dampers:
Help shut off or isolate airflow when needed
Environmental Protection
- Weather Hoods:
Protect outdoor fan inlets from rain, snow, and debris - Inlet Screens or Guards:
Help protect the fan and personnel. - Protective Coatings:
Support longer service life in corrosive or harsh environments.
Maintenance & Access
- Access Doors:
Allow inspection and cleaning of the fan interior - Drain Connections:
Help manage moisture or condensate - Split Housing:
Improves access for fan maintenance and repair
